Fringe Season is upon us!
Well folks, the summer has hit well and truly in Perth and that means that the Fringe Season is here. I have a conservative million shows on this year and I’m doing my best to remind myself that stress is a choice, late ticket sales aren’t anything new, and the reason I do so many things is because I LOVE being busy.
It’s a hard thing to enjoy busyness while not allowing yourself to get stuck in the ideas that a) you need to be constantly productive or b) you must be stressed because you’re doing so much.
People often talk to me sympathetically about how much I’m doing. It’s really easy to slip into a victim role and agree with folks that I am overwhelmed - because let’s be honest, I do love to chat about my projects. I’m passionate about them all. And I do a lot.
But all these things are my choice. I am trying to remind myself more than ever this year that these musical projects are worthy of my time because I enjoy this process so much. I love thinking about what music does for me, how it communicates for or to me. And they are not inherently stressful. Being busy is not stressful. Being busy is a privilege. Having no ticket sales is stressful, but I’ve been lucky every year and I hope that my luck holds a little longer.
So if you’re thinking of coming to a show of mine, I hope you enjoy it. I also hope you take a chance on some other small shows that are local, or small shows that are from interstate, because this business of ours can be rough sometimes, and for those small acts your money and support mean a huge amount.
